the northeast is bra issing for a monster snowstorm. >> good evening. >> i'm jim advance. that storm is expected to bring an awful lot of, so much that travel will suffer. airlines are already waiving the fees to change canceled flights. hundreds have already been canceled for tomorrow. the same storm will have some impact on ultimate. already a winter weather advisories not far away. doug kammerer, truth is, though, we are dodging another major bullet, right? >> we really are. this storm taking place just a bit too far to the north and east for us to get any major impacts from it. you mentioned the airports, logan in boston already shutting down operations tomorrow morning, so that whole airport will be shut down most likely all day on friday, all day on saturday, maybe right on through the weekend. it does not include the d.c. metro area, does include frederick county, and to the place north and west.

this is for minor accumulations of sleet and snow. i really don't think we'll see too much back here, but just in case, the national weather service does have that in effect. they're going to come together just off our coastline, and that is the area that's going to be affected the most. behind this, though, we will get very cold and very windy on saturday. it's expected to be pounded by this storm. potentially 1 to 2, even 3 feet if this storm takes a certain path. gym cantore has up there to talk about the risks. >> if we look like this --

john britainens as confirmation hearings. today he was challenged by senators and quite a few protesters over the use of drones to kill suspected terrorists, including american citizens. steve handelsman has the latest. >> this hearing might have focused on cia waterboarding. there was some of that, might have focused on u.s. intelligence failures that led to the death of four u.s. diplomats in benghazi action and there was some of that. mostly it was a hard look at the growing phenomenon of america going to war by remote control, and what the rules on that ought to be. >> we look forward to hearing your testimony. >> reporter: at his senate confirmation hearing, the issue is not john brennan's ability to be cia director. he's a former top agent, white house counter-terror chief when osama bin laden was killed, but

why. pat? >> reporter: there's a problem in the chandra levy case, but tech be weeks before we know what it is. ingmar guandique, looking older, with a shorn head with a toad that that prosecutor described as the face of the devil. two years ago he got 60 years for the murder of chandra livy. guandique, back for hearings that could give him a new trial. sources tell news4 there's new evidence in the case, evidence that could taint the testimony of one of the witnesses. evident brought to the judge by prosecutors some time ago. so what's that new evidence? it's a superior courthouse secret. the judge is keeping everything private to protect the safety of

hearing for guandique. but it's behind closed doors. live in superior court, pat collins, news4. >> thank you, pat. there is a new sketch of the man accused of groping women in the springfield area of fairfax county. police think this man has assaulted 18 women since last fall. the most recent attack happened last night a 21-year-old woman, ther a marsh grabbed her from behind and ran away. in earlier incidents, that man was seen wearing a red bandanna or hat. in more recent incidents, victims said he had acany or shaving bumps on his face. investigators in annapolis believe the body of a 2-year-old girls is likely among piles of trash. neighbors of cassidy booth called police after not seeing the little girl in days. the mother's name is chelsea booth.

survivors of sandy are sleeping in hotels and motels after they lost their homes months ago. the federal government has spend $26 million just to house people in new jersey, but jim rosenfield found some who say they came very close to being left out in the cold. since sandy hit, it's been home to flooded-out refugees. including her 14-month-old son. >> i'm so stressed out every day. fema pays for booker's stay under a temporary program slated to end any day now. the agency says some 1500 people are still in the program in new jersey, down from a high of 5,000 when sandy first hit. >> they want people on a more permanent situation, but it's not easy. >> why? >> because you have hundreds of people applying -- you see one

about possible additional help. today fema also announced it's extending the program in both new york and new jersey. tonight at 11:00, with el we go north to breezy point, that's also devastated by fire the night sandy hit. >> what a mess it was and remains. >> and could be even worse with the storm heading up the coast. >> in that part of new york, they're under blizzard warnings right now, so they have been just hit, hit, hit and hit again. they're about to get hit one more time. this is going to be a brutal storm. they're going to be some major beach erosion, mott rad coastal -- so this is not a very good scenario playing out. in our area we're going to dodge yet another bullet. sandy hill well to the north. this is going to be the case one

more time. radar right now not showing anything. the storm not too far off. just down to the south, the rain moving into portions of southern virginia. we're looking at very heavy rain, back to the west, here's the second storm. these two systems will come together. if they were coming together around raleigh, we would be talking about a major storm here, but they're going to come together just off our coastline and move right up the coast in towards new york and the boston region. for us, we've been on the cool side. in here by 3:00, 4:00 in the morning, and then by 7:00 a.m., that's when i expect to see some of the heaviest rain around the i-95 cordon. to the west, some of you may not see anything from this storm, but there is going to be an area, maybe along i-81 that is cold enough to see this start off as some snow, maybe some

sleet. as the storm moving up, it's pretty much out of here. it's really starting to get its act together, places lie ocean city and rehoboth getting hit hard, and it could bring in enough cold air and some moisturery on saturday morning that we may get some snow on the back side, but i'm not anticipating too much in that form, either. what i am anticipating is a very windy and cold conditions for us. saturday will be one cold day for our region. boston, new york, one monster storm as far as rain, snow and wind go. this is just one computer model, gives us over an inch. look at this. 15 inches in new york, 32 inches of snow in the boston area. in the latest computer models, even more than that. even 30 inches, that would make this an historic storm up there. new york could be really shut

down. if you have any travel problems, watch out, you'll be dealing with those. look at boston, 58-mile-an-hour wind gusts in the northeast. 50 in providence. that's when you start talking about the blizzard warnings in effect through the boston region. our winds on saturday afternoon, upwards of 40 miles an hour. that's what we're going to see. i think for us saturday will be the most nasty day in our area. newsen storms will be what this is for us. but the blizzard to the northeast, and parts of new england, major travel disruptions for both those areas, and because of that, we will see travel disruptions here as well on saturday and sunday preside. caught ahead if you have a flight. the rain moves in overnight. you look for a messy rush hour, but once again this will be all rain. back to the west, there is a winter weather advisory for the potential for snow, maybe sleet early on. i'm not expecting a lot, but it doesn't take a lot to cause

nasty trouble. watch out if you're back to the west. the four-day forecast, only 38 for a high on saturday. the windchill on saturday between 25 and 30 all day long, a very cold day for us, 47 on sunday as we start to clear out. sunday should be a pretty nice day. ahead of our next storm system action it will be rain once again with a high of 52. another chance of rain or snow coming up next wednesday, once again, we just continue to dodge these storms. we've done it all wind long. a fiery debate today on whether the redskins should change their name. we're live at the national museum of the american indian. a northern virginia teenager killed in a crash by another driver allegedly texting behind the wheel. tonight we'll hear from the victim's family on the fact that virginia has passed a new stricker texting law. and new details about the explosion at a subshop in fairfax county. alex ovechkin getting

chris gordon is live still american indian museum, where this issue is being debated. chris? >> reporter: well, good evening. today a "the washington post" columnist wrote in the metro section urging the washington football team to change its name. post sports columnist mike weiss has urging the same thing since 2005. here at the american indian museum, they say they take offense to the name redskins. they feel it's racist. glee washington fans love their redskins, taking pride in making the playoffs this year. no harm is meant by rooting for the redskins, but some say it is hurtful. for 20 years some american indians have complained that the name "redskins" is racist and filed a law to get it changed. >> the name is derogatory, pejorative, and does not serve a

social justice purpose. in fact it harms and demeans native people. >> reporter: at the national museum of the american indian, they holding this symposium on racial stereotypes. >> there are posters, there are comparisons of other derogatory phrases and words used to describe minorities and nonnatives in this country, and particularly around sports. no one would stand for that these days. >> reporter: redskins fans are really invested in the teams. >> a key, a keychain. let me see your gloves. how about that hat? >> we're not finished. >> a money clip. how would you feel about changing the name redskins? >> wow, that would hurt. i couldn't do that. >> i'm a lifetime redskins fan. >> reporter: if they were to change the name, are you okay with that? >> i would still be a redskins

springfield area, this since last fall. the most recent incident happened last night. previous victims have said the groper wore a bandanna or red hat. he also has noticeable acne or shaving bumps on his fade. ingmar guandique could be one step closer to a new trial. sources tell us that the hearing has to do with new evidence tacked taint the testimony in the original trial. >> an annapolis woman is being held without bond in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter. chelsea booth was charged with first-degree murder today. police plan to search a dump site for the body of her daughter cass sill. police say she confessed to smothering the toddler, then throwing her in the dumpster. >> there's a county that inspired a plan to crack down on distracted drivers. that family is speaking out today.

carl and merrill's son died after he was hit by a driver wo police say was texting behind the wheel. today they spoke exclusively to northern virginia bureau chief julie carey. they spoke about their hopes for changes in the law. >> it really brought me back to that day of how horrible and i felt -- >> reporter: that's merrill rowellie talking about the moment this week that brought both sorrow and satisfaction of the it was her 19-year-old son's kyle death, police say caused by a texting driver that helped push bills that will make texting behind the wheel a primary offense and stiffen the penalty. >> yes, we will leave the legacy, unfortunately it's not a legacy that i wanted for him, but if it's going to prevent moresenseless accidents, it is thing eehapp. >> reporter: this is a stretch of route 7 where kyle rowellie

lost his life. his car had run out of gas, he was pushing it to a safer place when the driver hit the vehicle and him. kyle died at the scene. this is the record of text messages police prepared for the man's trial. it shows jason gauge had sent on received nine text messages in the nine minutes leading up to the crash, including a final text police they hi opened right before the crash, right before 911 was called. but the case failed because under current law texting while driving is a minor infraction. if the bills just approved move ahead and get the governor's signature, that will change and kyle's parents hope, save lives. >> part of you is it doesn't make any difference, but the rational side says we can help other people by sharing our story. >> she plans to wage her campaign, because she believes in legislation doesn't go far enough, and now her daughter is

beginning to drive. >> i would have liked to have seen it go further and ban all kinds of handheld devices, but unfortunately we are taking baby steps, but they're in the right direction. >> reporter: so she says she will keep the pressure on to get this bill signed into law and then start working on next year. in herndon, julie carey, news4. the man who was injured in an explosion inside his virginia s sub shop is out of the hospital. larry reese was treated for severe burns. police say that explosion was not an accident. neighbors sea she worked at that sub shop seven days a week. >> he had big plans. he was doing whatever it took to get there. >> they're trying to find the man spotted running from the scene after the explosion. this el say he could be hurt and they're still investigating the motive. the public sidewalks around the herbert hoover commerce building are about to get a

facelift. under a new design plan, the large security barriers in place since 9/11 will be replaced with more pedestrian-friendly barriers. the entrances both located in the commerce building will also be enhanced. planners hope this redesign will draw more foot traffic through that area. some public safety funding may be in jeopardy. that's because prince george's county is facing a serious budget shortfall. in fact, the leaders there say no services will be safe from cuts this year. prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins has a look at what's at stake. >> this is going to be very difficult, and we need to prepare ourselves. there will be cuts. >> reporter: he delivered a reminder. >> unfortunately there will not be any departments that will be spared. >> baker will have to make an

estimated $152 million in cuts to balance the county's $12.7 billion spending plan. while he's faced deficits before and avoided layoffs and furloughs, he says it won't be that easy this year. >> there's just no way, not enough income coming into the county. >> when can we expect answers? >> last night on the southern end of the county, residents spoke out hoping the community's needs wouldn't end up on the chopping block. the most vocal is friends of of the library, friends worried about rumors of cuts in hours and staffing. >> our system is highly integrated. loss of one library would impact the whole system. >> reporter: he says the possibility of cuts in those areas are the most troubling. >> we're at a point where we're making tremendous progress, not just in the police department, but in our state's attorney's office and sheriff's department, corrections department.

this is a reason that the whooping cough has made a dramatic comeback this year. scientists say they have found a new strain that may be resistant to vaccines. experts say they don't think it's more deadly, but the shots that are normally given don't work as well against this new strain. it's been reported the new strange? japan, france and finland. whooping cough used to be very common under the vaccine was

introduced in the 1940s. scientists published these latest findings in today's "new england journal of medicine." southern cooking is delicious, but fried chicken can increase your risk for a stroke. researchers at the university of alabama looked at a diet of 20,000 around the country. those who ate southern style food six days a week were 41% more likely to have a stroke than those who ate it about once a month. they say those who live in the southern states also more at risk for stroke than people living in other parts of the country. southerners know how to cook. a colleague, bruce johnson has a new book out called "don't eat the church food." i highly recommend it. >> i don't know you do that, in new orleans that's all we ate. it was delicious. >> you did it as a special thing. >> yes, three meals a day seven days a week for seven days. >> and nobody cooks with lard

good afternoon, everybody. i'm meteorologist doug kammerer. not a bad evening right now, we are dealing with plenty of cloud cover, but really not too bad for this time of year. 36234 gaithersburg. 37 in camp springs. it is going to be a fairly nice evening, i think for the next couple hours, but overnight we'll see the rain move in. some of you could be cold enough especially back toward the west, to see the storm start off with this snow or sleet. that's why we have the winter advisory in effect. i'm not worried too much about this area, i don't expect too much, but then again, sometimes it doesn't take much to have an

effect. just now sees some inklings of rain. you do don't have to go far to see where the real rain is, down to the south providing a lot of the rain, a second storm bringing chicago some very heavy snow, will merge together. this is trying to move in around 1:00, 2:00 in the morning, mostly this is on the light side. notice what happens back toward the west, winchester, along that i-81 corridor, maybe some snow there, but it's all rain. this is around 8:00 tomorrow morning's rush hour could been a problem. give yourself some extra time. messy out there. thanks, doug. what's that book, outgunned and undermanned? that's the way the wizards have been playing. >> it's amazing finally when they get this one piece of the puzzle, at least they're at home.

the northeast may be heart to get to or get from tonight or tomorrow? >> they've already canceled all flights out of the boston tomorrow and saturday. i expect them to do the same thing around portions of new york. that will have major implications here, too, so make sure you call ahead. future windchill, think i think will be the biggest impact for us. look at the windchill on saturday morning. 14 in martins burg, 16 in manassas, 18 in the district. it is going to be a very cold saturday. i think saturday will be the nastiest day, going up to a temperature of 25 for a windchill around 12:00 in the afternoon. so we are looking at a very cold day after the storm moves out, high temperature -- the highest windchill could be 25 degrees. going up for a high tomorrow of 45, only 38 on saturday, 47 on sunday. sunday the best day out of the next seven. temperatures do move above 50 on monday as another storm moving our way.
